Relieving Lower Back Pain

There are more than 80% of the adult population who have had lower back pain at some point in their lives. There are many causes of this condition, and proper medical intervention is needed to determine it.

The more usual causes are those related to physical activities that the person isn’t used to.

This over-exertion can result in a slipped disk (or a herniated disk). This usually happens when a person twists while lifting something. Now this probably sound serious, but it really isn’t that bad. It is merely the occurrence of your spinal bone bulging slightly, and touching on some nerves. There are basic exercises than can remedy this.

Lie on Your Back.

This is really simple, yet effective. Lie flat on the floor, with some pillows placed under your head and knees for support. This takes the strain away from your lower back. An alternate exercise is to prop your feet on a chair with your back on the floor.

It is recommended to stay in this position for around 5-25 minutes each session.

This will rest your back and relieve it of pressure. Be sure to walk around every hour when you do this exercise, and don’t do it for more than 2 days in a row.

Use Heating Pads and/or Ice Packs

Heated pads will help to relieve muscle spasm. You can use them for about 30 minutes each time. Ice packs can be used instead of heated pads.

Reducing Swelling With Medicine

Medications like Aspirin and Entrophen can help decrease swelling. You can also take Panadol for minor pain.

Therapeutic Massage

Inflammation and swelling can be improved by massaging the lower back. And as the muscles relax, circulation is increased and pain often lessens.

Your back pain will surely be relieved by using these tips and resting your back.

You might want to do some back-strengthening exercises to keep your back pain-free. We will have future articles on that topic.

You should make an appointment with your doctor if there is no improvement or if your back pains you for 2-3 weeks already. Professional medical advice is still the best.
