Lower Back Pain Caused By A Bad Mattress

Morning back pain is a very specific type of pain. The kind I am talking about is most severe in the morning when we first get out of bed. This is not normal. If the effects and age and gravity contribute to the compression of our spine and discs then shouldn’t this pain be most acute at night after being on our feet all day and not in the morning? Sleep is supposed to be a healing time for us it should not injure us.

Before I discovered the real cause of my back problems I considered many treatments such as disc decompression, inversion therapy, traction and even surgery. Disc decompression seemed like a reasonable choice. I had seen the ads on TV and they looked like a good solution. I learned that spinal disc compression treatment could cost up to $1,000 a month and that it was not covered by medical insurance. Year after year my pain increased and then there came a time when I could barely get out of bed one morning.

It was time to take action, to do something, anything. Then I saw an ad on TV about inversion tables. Since they are also a form of decompression therapy, or more correctly traction therapy, I decided to buy one. The cheapest one I could find was only $100. Now in my experience I would not recommend hanging upside down on a regular basis for a solution to back pain. It is not enjoyable to say the least. Your feet and ankles become sore and your blood rushes to your head. But eventually I did get used to hanging upside down.

After about two weeks using the inversion table I did notice an improvement. My back pain did seem to be going away little by little. In fact I would take it for granted and stop using the inversion table only to regret it days later as the morning pain returned. This was maddening. Why was my pain most severe in the morning? Sleep is suppose to be a healing experience not a painful one.

Finally I ripped off all the blankets and sheets on my bed and gave my mattress a very careful inspection. I noticed the mattress did have a slightly concave shape to it, like a very shallow bowl. I imagined this bowl shape was even more pronounced when my weight was on it. Could this be the problem? Seemed unlikely to me. When I was young I could sleep on anything without any trouble. But, I was not young anymore. Time to try a new mattress.

I considered many types of mattresses and beds before finally deciding on a memory foam (MF) bed but the cost was just too high for me. The prices of high quality visco elastic MF mattresses can be thousands of dollars. What if this did not solve my problem? Then I would be out a lot of money. With the Internet at my finger tips I did some research and found I could make my own MF mattress and platform frame and save thousands of dollars. In my case, this dreaded morning back pain was indeed caused by a bad mattress and a MF bed was the solution.
