Can Sitting Kill You?
If you are an office worker you probably spend at least six or seven hours a day sitting on the job. Add more time sitting in the car, at dinner and lounging with some late night TV and the total hours of sitting rockets up to somewhere around ten hours.
How often do you actually think about sitting?
For most of you it has been a long time ago, or maybe never.
Promise yourself that you’ll take a critical look at how you sit after you read this article. If you are sitting and reading this online, go ahead and freeze right now and really think about how you are sitting. Compare your sitting position to this checklist:
Proper Sitting Posture Checklist
Sit with you legs uncrossed with ankles in front of the knees.
Place both feet firmly on the floor.
Your knees should be lower than your hips and the back of your knees should not touch the seat.
If your chair has an adjustable backrest, move it to support the arch in your low back.
Stand up and move every hour or less. Taking a break and moving is crucial not just to back health, but your overall health as well. Even if you can’t stop working, move. Use the phone while standing, go to a coworkers office to ask a question, find a reason. If you really cant do any of these, at least wiggle in your chair occasionally.
Why Is Proper Sitting Posture Important?
Good posture is important for long term health and disease prevention just like daily tooth brushing. And, similar to tooth brushing, habits are formed early and can be hard to break later in life.
Proper posture will lower the stress on your backs ligaments and tendons. The ligaments of your spine have the job of holding your bones together. Proper sitting also lowers muscle fatigue. When you sit properly the muscles work in unison, and less energy is used, all giving you less fatigue.
Most would agree that proper posture is a key ingredient in health. The problem is that very few of us actually think about it through out the day. My challenge to you is to make your posture while sitting a focus through out your day. Do this for 30 days and you will be amazed at how many of the ingredients on the checklist you are doing with out thinking about it. Make this a part of your life and you will be on your way to a healthy back.
