Hot Stone Massage, Stone Therapy Benefits And Starting From Scratch
Having a hot stone massage is amongst the most comforting things you can do, with stone therapy benefits making you feel great quickly. If you have never had one, it’s like a mixture of a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage, with the help of hot stones. However, if you go for one of these, you do need to make sure the practitioner has received the right training, particularly as the stones can burn if they are too hot. If you are the practitioner, this is a self-help guide to what you should do.
The stones should be warmed for 15-20 minutes and in accordance with the heating unit instructions. The heating unit will heat the stones to the ideal temperature so this reduces the possibility of burning the skin.
To practice as a licensed massage therapist, you need to have a separate room set up for the clients with soft lights, aromatherapy, soft music as well as fresh linens for your massage table.
When your client enters the room, let them know what type of massage they are receiving so they understand what to expect. Show them the stones and allow them to feel the temperature of them so they are not surprised by the level of warmth. Leave the room and have them remove their clothes and cover up with the sheet provided.
Distribute the stones out on the massage table in pairs at approximately two inch intervals across the path of the client’s spine. Ask them to lay back on the stones. Adjust the stones as required, they should not be pressing your client’s spine. Give them a few minutes to get comfortable.
Take a little warmed oil and rub a little bit between your hands then rub the warmed oil on the client’s face. Take four small stones from your stone heating unit and put them on the client’s face. One to the forehead, one on each cheek and the other on the chin.
Only uncover the body part you are working on to help keep your client warm and comfy during his massage. Start at the leg and rub some of the warmed up oil to the leg, then pick two stones and rub the leg with them. Choose four more small stones and place each one between the toes. Cover the leg again and do this for the other leg.
Massage each arm using the oil, rub the arms with two hot stones and place a stone in each palm. Once this is done, leave these stones in contact with your client’s body for about ten minutes then remove them in the order you put them on. Have your client roll to one side to remove the stones on the table.
Have them flip onto their tummy and place hot stones on the shoulders and lower back. Keep the client covered. Place stones on their bottom, the backs of their knees and calves as well.
While you are waiting for these stones to work their magic and maximise the stone therapy benefits, give your client a good head massage.
Take away the stones from your client and stroke their backs lightly to remove any negative energy and you’ll be confident that you have given them a great hot stone massage and encourage them to return for more.
