Three Common Causes of Back Pain
As you may know, back pain is a common ailment that many people have with a variety of causes that are known. You may have been injured which could cause temporary or permanent discomfort. Oftentimes, this can also be a symptom related to being sick. Most of the time the back pain that you experience is the result of activities that you do every day. In fact, the way that we exercise, walk, and even sleep, can actually cause enough strain on our backs to cause everyday discomfort.
If you sit at a desk or computer, or anywhere, for a long time without moving around, you might be subject to back pain. Basically, it doesn’t mean that the chair or seat is uncomfortable. Just the act of sitting is what’s at fault. If you are standing or moving around, there is a lot less pressure on your back than if you are seated. Office workers, draftsmen, and writers – who spend hours on the computer – are all vulnerable to back pain. There are now companies that produce desks that allow you to stand up if you choose, and then can be lowered so you can work sitting down. There are other benefits to sitting less, as well. Research has reported that if you spend less time seated, you will be healthier. If it isn’t possible for you to work standing up, at least part of the time, make it a point to get up frequently from your chair and do some type of movements. You back will enjoy the change if you just get up, walk around, stretch, and then go back to work. One real common cause of back pain is a spinal fracture. Spinal fractures usually occur because of a reduction in bone mass due to osteoporosis. Women are more apt to suffer from osteoporosis than men; however, people of both sexes are vulnerable as they grow older. The decrease in the bone mass causes the bones to become thinner and more brittle. This makes it easier for the bones to become damaged. An extreme case is when the bones weaken and collapse, which can cause the spine to become deformed. Of course, your health care provider can give you medication for your pain. This doesn’t address the root problem, however. Surgery may become necessary in order to keep the fractured bones stationary. One method to strength your torso and help support your back is exercise. There are specific exercises for the abdomen and back that can help you. This should be coupled with a natural, healthy diet that can help prevent osteoporosis or rebuild your bone mass.
Too much stress is also a catalyst for back pain in your life. If you are feeling tense, your muscles will respond in a similar manner. Each person will have a different reaction to stress in their lives, which may develop as a backache, stiff neck, or an ailment somewhere else on the body. To avoid physical symptoms, you need to reduce your stress before it affects your body. Parts of your body can also become inflamed due to the release of cortisol in your body caused by stress.
There are many ways to reduce stress, but the first step is recognizing it and acknowledging that it’s an issue for you. Even if your back pain was caused by something else, stress can make it worse and make it take longer to heal, so it’s worthwhile to find ways to reduce stress in your life.
It’s not easy to live with chronic back pain. Even getting up in the mornings can seem like a major chore. As they say, “knowledge is power”, and if you can discover the root of your back pain, you can take the steps to prevent it returning in the future. If your back pain is caused by health issues, it’s wise to get those problems taken care of first. If not, simply pay attention to your overall health and fitness, your diet, and any other issues in your life that may lead to back pain.
