Pain and Your Bellevue Chiropractor
Have you ever wondered why it is that people get so much help while seeing a chiropractor? In my career I have been lucky enough to be able to follow the progression of research that has revealed the answer to this very question. The answer lies in the vast amount of research that has been done over the last 20 years on the nervous system and the brain. In this research we have uncovered that the reason the chiropractic adjustment is so powerful is that it affects the nervous system which is what allows us to sense pain.
When I ask some one what they think of when the think of a chiropractor the answer is usually the same. “Bone doc’s”, “bone crunchers” and many other fun names. In all reality this is fairly far from the truth. “Doctors of the nervous system” would be a more accurate representation of what it is chiropractors are. How is this you ask? Well to answer that question I will need to dive a little deep into some neurology, but I promise to bring it back around for every one.
If a joint becomes stuck in place, or what we call fixed due to injury, poor postures, and so on, a number of things occur with in the nerves. This “joint fixation” or immovability will decrease the rate of firing of the joint mechanoreceptor in turn decreasing the rate of firing of the large diameter 1A fibers of the nerve. This decrease of the rate of firing decreases the inhibition of C fibers, or the pain fibers of the nerve which will increase activity of these C fibers. This process leads to an increase in pain.
I have an amazing job, because I daily get to work with my patients to reverse this reaction by removing joint fixation and allowing your body to function normally.
Whew…that took my breath away getting through that! Lets talk now about that nagging pain between your shoulders. The vast majority of mid back pain is due to “joint fixation” in between the shoulders. A Bellevue chiropractor would be able to diagnose the problem and fix it.
This is the neurological reason why the chiropractic adjustment works as well as it does.
